Hurricane season runs to Nov. 30. Look up your storm surge zone, sign up for Doral Alerts and Miami-Dade Alerts, and call 311 for evacuation centers.

Last checked Oct. 8, 2026. Facts on this page come from Miami-Dade County Emergency Management and the City of Doral’s 2026 hurricane season guide. Live through Nov. 30.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to Nov. 30. Doral is inland, and the city says most of it is not in a mandatory evacuation zone, but parts are, so your address matters. Evacuation orders and shelter openings come from Miami-Dade County, whose Emergency Management department is headquartered in Doral, at the R. David Paulison Fire Rescue Headquarters on NW 41st Street. Forecasts and warnings come from the National Weather Service in Miami and the National Hurricane Center.

Who to call

Know your zone

Miami-Dade issues evacuation orders by storm surge planning zone, or part of a zone. Look up your address in the county’s Storm Surge Planning Zone finder, and bookmark it. When an order is given, the county’s Evacuation Orders map shows whether it covers you.

There are two kinds of instructions, according to the county’s evacuation page:

  • Evacuation recommendation: the mayor may advise some people to leave, such as those who need extra time because of mobility problems or who live in flood-prone areas outside the surge zones.
  • Evacuation order: the mayor orders residents of specific areas to leave, based on the hurricane’s track and projected storm surge.

Evacuation centers

The county says to stay with family or friends inland, outside the evacuation area, if you can; evacuation centers are a shelter of last resort. Once an evacuation is announced, the list of open centers is posted on miamidade.gov and available from 311, and emergency buses run from signed pickup sites. Not every center opens for every storm. Public transit may shut down three hours before the storm or when winds pass 39 mph.

  • Each person gets about 20 square feet. Bring bedding or a folding chair, medicine, water, snacks, a change of clothes, cash, baby supplies and charged phones and battery packs.
  • Pet-friendly centers are announced before a storm for people in evacuation areas, unsafe buildings or mobile homes. Service animals are allowed at every center.
  • Need a ride because of a disability or medical need? Register now for the county’s Emergency and Evacuation Assistance Program.

Sandbags

Neither the City of Doral’s 2026 hurricane guide nor the county’s hurricane page lists a standing sandbag distribution site. If one is set up before a storm, it will be announced through Doral Alerts and Miami-Dade Alerts, and we will post it here.

Tax-free storm supplies

Florida made many storm items permanently tax-free from Aug. 1, 2025, the city reported, so there is no need to wait for a sales tax holiday. The list includes portable generators up to 10,000 running watts, AA, AAA, C, D, 6-volt and 9-volt batteries, waterproof tarps up to 1,000 square feet, ground anchors and tie-down kits, gas or diesel cans of 5 gallons or less, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and fire extinguishers. Questions: Florida Department of Revenue, 850-488-6800.

Before the next storm

From the city’s hurricane guide and the county’s kits and checklists:

  • Keep at least three days of supplies: one gallon of water per person per day, nonperishable food, flashlight, batteries, first-aid kit, medicines and documents in a waterproof container.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full all season.
  • Record a video of every room for insurance, and check whether you have flood coverage, which is a separate policy.
  • Ask your homeowners association about its storm plan and shutter rules.
  • Download the Ready Miami-Dade app for evacuation center and shelter updates.

What this means for you

  • Look up your surge zone today; it takes one minute.
  • Sign up for both Doral Alerts and Miami-Dade Alerts.
  • Buy generators, batteries and tarps any time; they are tax-free.
